I try and support organisations in their efforts to articulate a vision to allow them to develop and find their own performance through purpose; to change their focus from a business purpose to a higher purpose. One that if followed leads to you achieving even greater business successes as an outcome, rather than an objective.

The chance to further this narrative through the concept of the triple bottom line (TBL) of people, planet and profits, through the incredible work being done by the Achilles team, is a squaring of the circle moment for me.

It’s why I chose this path and I’m honoured and massively excited to find an outlet through their work to achieve another dimension of performance through purpose.

We are Living in a Different Era

The UN has set out its sustainable development goals and across the business world, organisations are responding by embracing a new Environmental Social Governance (ESG) era that encompasses GHG emissions and the drive to net zero.

Approximately 160 million children were subjected to child labour at the beginning of 2020 according to the ILO and UNICEF - approximately 1 in 10 of all children worldwide.

The International Labour Organisation estimated that 49.6 million people were living in modern slavery on any given day in 2021, an increase of 10 million people since 2016.

In 2020 the European Union generated 95.5 million tonnes of hazardous waste, an increase of 5.1% compared with 2010*

Alongside this focus on renewable energy, there is also a very welcome increasing focus on people too. What is being referred to as the “Just Transition” addresses the wider UN Sustainability Goals, that look beyond emissions reductions, such as environmental pollution, human rights, modern slavery, child labour and health and safety.

This is being fuelled by some very real social and environmental issues that, despite company policies being in place for many years, are getting worse not better.

THE CURRENT REALITY

Germany is Leading the Way in Europe

The Lieferkettengesetz requires companies to take responsibility for human rights and environmental violations in their supply chains.

There are big potential penalties for getting it wrong:

Fines of up to EUR 800,000 or 2% of annual global turnover.
Financial penalties of up to EUR 50,000 .
Exclusion from winning public contracts in Germany for up to three years.

The EU is taking Positive Action to Drive Supply Chain Improvement

From 2024, EU CS DDD will require companies to take responsibility for human rights and environmental violations in their supply chains.
